In addition to the 15-inch MacBook Air, other Mac laptops and desktops are reportedly in development, including updated Mac Studio and iMac models.
- Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggested that Apple could introduce a larger 15-inch MacBook Air at the upcoming five-day WWDC event in June.
- The company is also working on other Macs, including a new high-end MacBook Pro, two new Mac Studio models, and updated 24-inch iMacs.
- However, future Mac laptops are expected to run Apple’s current M2 chips instead of next-generation M3 processors.
Big MacBook Air Coming Soon
The latest edition of Bloomberg’s Gurman Power On newsletter mentions that some of the laptops Apple is working on will be announced at the upcoming WWDC event, which runs from June 5-9.
The larger MacBook Air with a 15-inch screen could be one of the laptops on display at the show. The machine recently appeared in developer magazines as Apple began testing it internally with the most popular apps from the App Store.
The MacBook Air is Apple’s most popular laptop, so adding a new screen size could add to its appeal. The hardware upgrade should also help with sales, with Mac revenue recently down more than 40 percent in the most recent quarter.
Two new MacBook Pros
Gurman claims that in addition to a new 15-inch model and an updated 13-inch model, Apple is also working on two new MacBook Pros: an updated 13-inch model and a new “high-end”model. He says these laptops will go on sale this year or early 2024.
Apple is also reportedly planning an update to its 24-inch all-in-one iMac desktop PC (the current M1-based model dates from April 2021). Herman believes that the Cupertino-based company is also planning a sequel to Mac Studio. Meanwhile, the wait for Apple’s silicon version of the Mac Pro workstation continues.
When will M3-based Macs be available?
All future models are based on the current Apple M2 chip. “The logs show machines running chips with an octa-core processor divided between four high-performance and four efficient cores and a 10-core GPU,”reads the fact sheet.
It looks like Apple won’t release an M3-based Mac until 2024.
I was told at least some of the new laptops will be announced at WWDC. But there’s a big caveat: the models coming out in June probably won’t have the big new M3 chips. Instead, they will run something according to the current M2 processors. The base M2 chip debuted in June 2022 and faster options have followed.
Here are Mac models based on Apple M2 chips:
- M2
- MacBook Air (2022)
- 13″MacBook Pro (2022)
- 11″iPad Pro (6th generation 2022)
- 12.9″iPad Pro (6th generation) (2022)
- Mac Mini (2023)
- M2 Pro
- 14″MacBook Pro (2023)
- 16″MacBook Pro (2023)
- Mac Mini (2023)
- M2 Max.
- 14″MacBook Pro (2023)
- 16″MacBook Pro (2023)
Gurman didn’t say a word about the M2 chips, which he thinks will be used in the 15-inch MacBook Air and other models. Therefore, we are still determining whether new Macs will use the same old M2 chips as previous models, or updated versions of them.
