Written by Jantje Friese and directed by Baran bo Odar, the 1899 television series starring Emily Beecham, Anuerine Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann and Miguel Bernardo tells the story of the passengers of a huge steamship, of different cultures and backgrounds, but united in search of a better life in the USA. They encounter another migrant boat, the Prometheus, drifting on the high seas, which turns their journey into a terrible nightmare.

The 1899 production took place on a new, state-of-the-art virtual stage set up at the Babelsberg Studios in Germany, the largest of its kind in Europe. 1899 is the result of a global production agreement between the duo Jantier Frize-Baran bo Odar and the streaming platform Netflix, concluded in 2018 and valid until next year. At the time, it was the first such project in Europe for Netflix, tied to the unexpected success of Dark.
