After eight years and 12 million sales, Cities: Skylines is getting a sequel. Cities: Skylines II will release in 2023 on PC and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, again from original developer Colossal Order and publisher Paradox Interactive. This new simulator will offer even more advanced tools and mechanics, and perhaps most importantly for the existing community, the game will be able to support advanced modding. Cities: Skylines II will allow players to transform small villages into giant metropolitan areas and then implement highly detailed building, transportation, industry and economic systems.

The original Cities: Skylines was released in 2015, filling the void left by EA after the disappointing Sim City reboot. Colossal Order hasn’t stopped updating its simulation game since launch: in addition to the integration of purchasable content, the game has won the right to a dozen important expansions that have revolutionized industry, education, parks and airports. Today’s Cities: Skylines is completely different from the game that came out in 2015.

Mods and the community are a big part of the success of Cities: Skylines. Hundreds of thousands of free user-generated content are available to play on Steam, and the most popular mods have over 2 million subscribers, including improving key mechanics such as road building or traffic control. The game has also developed a very vibrant YouTube community with city visits (virtual and real) hundreds of episodes back. In 2022 alone, the game attracted over 5.5 million new players.

Colossal Order explains that Cities: Skylines II features “comprehensive transportation and economic systems, multiple building and customization options, and advanced modding options.”The original Cities: Skylines will celebrate its eighth anniversary on March 10, and Colossal Order has promised to reveal more information about the sequel in the coming months.
