Who is Inarius in Diablo 4?
Inarius was once a respected archangel as well as an advisor to the Angiris Council. He reveled in his beauty and was known to boast loudly about his cleanliness. Inarius served Tyrael and was known as one of the strongest warriors on the battlefield. The other angels considered him a hero, as he slew demons over and over again during the Eternal Conflict – the war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells.
Eternal conflict
War between the two powers always ended in a stalemate. Having witnessed widespread bloodshed on both sides, Inarius decided that he wanted to break free from the chains of the Eternal War. During one of these battles, he was captured by demons and enslaved in hell. He screamed his desire to end the Eternal Conflict, and Lilith heard him. She freed Inarius and told him that they would meet again.
Explanation of the knowledge of Inarius and Lilith
Inarius found himself getting close to Lilith. Both of them conspired to build their own world, free from widespread destruction and bloodshed. So, while the armies of Heaven and Hell fought, Inarius and Lilith gathered a band of renegade angels and demons who shared the same views as their own.
Having stolen the World Stone, they used it to create the Sanctuary – the overworld of Diablo 4. It was here that they created their offspring – the Nephalem. This race was immortal and much stronger than angels and demons. The followers of Inarius said that the Nephalem race was the greatest blasphemy. They feared that if the leaders of Heaven and Hell discovered the Nephalem, it would mean the end of the Sanctuary. They begged Inarius to put an end to them.

When Lilith heard about this, she became furious at the thought of her children dying out. She assumed a violent demonic form and then went on to kill each and every one of Inarius’ followers, angels and demons alike. When Inarius found out about this, he banished her from the Sanctuary and sent her to the Void. It had to stay true to its promise that he would never hit Lilith or let another do it. From that moment on, the Nephalem’s powers dwindled, and a few generations later they became mortals – what we now know as humans.
The Dark Fate of Inarius
Lilith’s father, Mephisto, was given custody of Inarius and brought him to the Burning Hells. His wings were slowly torn off his back in huge chains. What’s more, the serrated hooks were then used to stretch Inarius’ once glowing skin. His facial features were also distorted by vile powers, and he seemed to have no face at all. He was denied even the freedom to die until an inexplicable series of events led to him escaping captivity.
Return of Inarius
In the Diablo 4 trailer, Inarius attacks a horde of demons. While we don’t know if he escaped or was released from captivity, at the end of the trailer, Inarius throws a spear at Lilith.
