How the iPhone 15 Pro Action Button Can Work in the Camera App

You’ll invoke different features of the stock Camera app on iPhone 15 Pro depending on how hard you press the force-sensitive Action button.

  • The Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max is rumored to serve different purposes in apps like the Camera.
  • Also coming: new button combinations for shutdown and forced restart.
  • The Action button should be customizable for specific apps on the device.

How to force restart iPhone 15 Pro?

To turn off or restart any Face ID-enabled iPhone, press and hold the volume up or down button and the side button.

Similarly, to force restart an iPhone (also known as a hard reset), you must quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then quickly press and release the Volume Down button, and finally press and hold the Side button until the device reboots.

But those button combinations appear to change with the introduction of the pushable Action button (formerly the Mute toggle) on the upcoming Apple iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models.

According to Twitter account leaker @analyst941, who previously leaked a bunch of details about iOS 17, the volume buttons and side buttons will no longer be used to turn off or force restart the device. “The sequence remains, but the combination will be changed to an action and a power button,” the tipster explains.

In case you missed this or don’t understand how a capacitive button can be “lightly”or “hard”pressed: again, capacitive buttons (including action) will be force sensitive.

It’s like 3D touch, so it recognizes whether you’re just tapping it, pressing lightly, or pressing hard.

Action button in Camera app

The multi-function button could be assigned different system actions and functions for each supported application. For example, in the Camera app, the Action button lets you focus the camera, take a picture, or record a video. This is because the button must have force sensors to detect how hard the user is pressing on it.

Also, in the camera app, the action button (formally the mute switch) will replace the volume up button for taking photos.

Using the action button in the camera:

– Light press: camera autofocus

– Hard press: captures a photo

– Hard, long press: capture/record video

Currently, you can press the volume up button to take a photo in the Camera app.

Holding down the button will shoot continuously (if Volume Up for Burst is enabled in Settings > Camera). You can also press and hold the volume down button to record QuickVideo without switching from photo mode.
