Apple iPhone 14 may have more prominent camera bump according to new leaked schematics

Apple is expected to launch its iPhone 14 series later this year, with the iPhone 14 Pro set to play its usual role as the line’s flagship variant. A slew of device diagrams have been released recently, showing off the phone’s thicker body, the much talked about redesigned notch, and now a much larger camera module than what the iPhone 13 Pro already has. In explaining this, renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has now offered an explanation for why the Apple iPhone 14 Pro camera could get bigger this year.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro may get a new wide-angle camera

Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted: “The main reason for the larger and more prominent rear camera bump on the 14 Pro/Pro Max is the upgrade to a 48MP wide camera (up from 12MP on the 13 Pro/Pro Max). The diagonal length of the 48MP CIS will increase by 25-35%, while the height of the 48MP 7P lens will increase by 5-10%.”

Simply put, it looks like the Apple iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are set to use a significantly larger wide-angle camera sensor, which will be 35 percent longer in length compared to the current 12-megapixel wide-angle camera sensor. The latter is also expected to be paired with the new lens, which will also be about 10 percent taller.

It’s unclear if the 48MP wide-angle camera will also be used in the regular Apple iPhone 14 models. Previous rumors have already suggested that Apple could use a 48MP main camera sensor this year, which could also contribute to a larger camera module design.

If the module ends up getting bigger, it remains to be seen how Apple will work to even out the feel of the smartphone in the hand. Apple’s iPhones have generally always had a one-piece design language, which was broken with the iPhone 13 Pro due to its rather large rear pod that prevents it from sitting flush on a table. With an even larger module, this will only get worse.

The Apple iPhone 14 series is speculated to launch with the A16 Bionic SoC, which would be par for the course for Apple phones. Other key rumors also include a drilled hole and pill design for a notch at the top, and the lack of a physical SIM slot.
