El Muerto: Bad Bunny will be the first Latin American superhero in the Sony Spider-Man universe.

Sony Pictures Entertainment announces the development of a movie based on the Marvel character El Muerto starring Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny.

The character El Muerto, also known as Juan Carlos Estrada Sanchez, is a super strong wrestler who fought Spider-Man in a wrestling match in which he nearly unmasked Spider-Man before being paralyzed by poison. He is attacked by the supernatural luchador Eldorado, rescued by the famed web weaver, and teams up with him to defeat him. While El Muerto may not be as popular as Venom or Kraven the Hunter, the speed with which Sony began development on this film has a lot to do with Bad Bunny’s determination to find the right superhero.

After several meetings to find him the lead role, the Latin Trap icon took matters into her own hands and began digging through Spider-Man’s library to find suitable Latin characters for him, eventually stumbling upon El Muerto. Sony Pictures Entertainment liked the idea and hope to get to work on the project quickly given Bad Bunny’s busy schedule.

El Muerto will feed the SBU in 2024

At CinemaCon 2022, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panich, who introduced Bad Bunny on stage to the press, announced that El Muerto will be released on January 12, 2024.
