One of the most important game mechanics in Fortnite, and one that sets the game apart from many similar battle royale games, has consistently been the building mechanic. The mechanic essentially allows players to erect tall defensive and sometimes offensive structures to gain an advantage over enemies.
Curiously, the mechanic seems to have disappeared from the game after the antics of in-game villains. For players worried that this will be a constant change of pace in Fortnite, they can rest easy knowing that the game has a lore-based explanation.
In the new narrated narrative, the villains appear to have stripped the power of the Resistance, leaving players vulnerable and encouraging more aggressive playstyles.
Fortnite – building mechanic removal is part of the narrative
The building mechanic has been removed from all game modes in Fortnite with the exception of Competitive Playlists and Arena, and there is no set date yet for when it will return. Speculation in the community suggests that the climbing and parkour mechanics were introduced in Season 2 to accommodate the lack of an all-powerful building mechanic.
While it’s likely not permanent, it does give developers a great way to experiment with Fortnite’s game mode without building mechanics. One of the most common complaints from new players has often been how dumb and overwhelming the building mechanics can seem at the start.
A game mode without such mechanics could potentially provide players with a simpler and more accessible experience. While it will take away what essentially makes Fortnite unique, it could potentially open up the game to a new audience.
It will be interesting to see how the narrative unfolds and when the Resistance can bring back the building mechanic in Fortnite Season 2.
