Netflix acquires Boss Fight Entertainment, its third game studio in six months

Netflix, the world’s largest video streaming provider, has acquired the game studio for the third time by taking over Boss Fight Entertainment. The acquisition, which was completed last week, gives Netflix access to a wider range of game studios and therefore increases the number of games it can work on. The move is, of course, a push to get more games on Netflix Games, the sort of mini-game store Netflix is building in its own app.

Netflix games and their expansion

With this acquisition, Netflix left no doubt that it is actively seeking to expand the reach of its mobile game store. Amir Rahimi, vice president of Game Studios at the company, said in a post, “We are still in the early stages of making great games as part of your Netflix membership. Through partnerships with developers around the world, hiring top talent and similar acquisitions, we hope to build a world-class gaming studio capable of delivering a wide range of exciting and engaging original games – without ads or in-app purchases – to our hundreds of millions of members worldwide.”

Earlier this month, Netflix added three new titles to its collection of mobile games, bringing the total to 17 games that can be accessed through the mobile app. Recent games added to the collection include This Is A True Story, Shatter Remastered, and Into The Dead 2: Unleashed, among others.

When the aforementioned games were added, the company said it would make additional gaming announcements before the end of the month, and with the acquisition of Boss Fight Entertainment, it did the same. Netflix is now positioning itself as an alternative play store that offers no ads or in-app purchases through games on its platform.

The games on the service are also included in existing subscription plans, and there are no dedicated plans just for games at the moment. Netflix has already stated that going forward, it aims to offer exclusive mobile games as part of its offering in both the Android Play Store and the iOS App Store.
