Nintendo: second research and development center to be built at the end of 2027

Following the acquisition of land owned by the Kyoto Municipality, Nintendo announces the construction of a second R&D center to speed up production and improve the performance of its next consoles.

A 12-story steel structure with a total area of 38,000 m² of 10,028.55 m² acquired for five billion yen (the land of the former Foundation Support Factory and the former Materials and Disaster Prevention Center), the second Nintendo building will be inserted by December 2027 between the headquarters a Japanese publishing house and the first building dedicated to research and development.

At the end of the year, Nintendo plans to open an official store in Osaka. Finally, the museum of the Japanese firm must be opened during fiscal year 2023, i.e. no earlier than March 2024.

Nintendo R&D spending on the rise

Between FY2019/20 and FY2020/21, Nintendo’s R&D spending increased by 10%. For the 2021-2022 financial year, the Japanese manufacturer expected costs of 755 million euros. This apparent increase is due to the production cost of Switch games (higher than previous Nintendo machines), the cost of various strategic research, and the investment in conceptualizing the new console.
