Samsung announces UFS 4.0 storage solution with double the speed of UFS 3.1

Samsung, one of the leading manufacturers of smartphones and semiconductors, has announced the release of a storage solution for next-generation smartphones. The company has shared details on its Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 4.0 storage solution, which will be the successor to the UFS 3.1 we’ve seen on most flagships over the past year.

UFS 4.0 has received approval from the Board of Directors of the Joint Electronic Devices Engineering Council (JEDEC), and the brand shared some thoughts on future storage solutions. In short, as you might expect, UFS 4.0 will provide faster read and write speeds. In addition, the solution is said to provide bandwidth for 5G smartphones that need to process huge amounts of data, as well as make the phones more energy efficient.

Samsung UFS 4.0: features and specifications

As mentioned earlier, Samsung UFS 4.0 implements the latest JEDEC standard specification. It is said that this solution from Samsung will improve the performance and energy efficiency of future smartphones. UFS 4.0 will offer speeds up to 23.2Gbps per lane, which is twice the speed of the latest generation of UFS 3.1. This bandwidth is said to be designed specifically for the 5G phone, which requires huge amounts of data to be processed, and is also expected to be adopted in future augmented reality and virtual reality applications.

Inside, the Samsung UFS 4.0 is equipped with 7th generation V-NAND and a proprietary controller. It will offer sequential read speeds up to 4200MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 2800MB/s. However, the speed may vary depending on the test environment. UFS 4.0 will provide sequential read speeds of 6.0 MB/s per mA, which is 46% faster than the previous generation, which means we can see better battery life on phones.

In terms of size, UFS 4.0 will have a maximum size of 11mm x 13mm x 1mm. In terms of storage capacity, it will be up to 1TB. Mass production of the same will likely start in the third quarter of 2022 and we can expect phones with UFS 4.0 storage later this year or early next year.
