Sheryl Sandberg is under Meta’s internal investigation
When the COO announced her departure from Menlo Park, The Wall Street Journal reported that the company wanted to know, in part, whether she had used the company’s resources to prepare for her future marriage. Today, an American newspaper reveals some of the details of this investigation.
She allegedly diverted company resources for her own needs.
Meta lawyers are particularly interested in the role of Facebook employees in the creation of Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In and their work in promoting her recent book Option B. The company also wanted to know if the businesswoman used Facebook employees to suppress a story about his former partner, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick. The company may attempt to deflect potential regulatory concerns if such work is not properly reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Sheryl Sandberg may have to “reimburse the company for employee time spent on personal projects,”according to the report.
This investigation is indicative of Sheryl Sandberg’s changing status within the company in recent years. As noted by The Wall Street Journal, the personal lives of Sheryl Sandberg and Mark Zuckerberg are closely linked to social relationships. The Meta spends millions of dollars each year on personal security and travel expenses, and both executives have had the opportunity to turn to Facebook employees for help with their personal projects. The fact that Sheryl Sandberg must now be held accountable for these actions shows how much her influence has diminished.
