Catalonia wants to have its own metaverse and intends to make Barcelona a leading digital hub.
The Metaverse is on everyone’s lips, and not just in tech companies. Catalonia’s CEO for Innovation, Daniel Macro, intends to turn the region into a true digital hub, focusing in particular on blockchain and metaverse technologies. Excerpts from an exclusive interview given to Cointelegraph Editor-in-Chief Alex Cohen at the European Blockchain Convention (EBC) 2022.
Catalonia wants its own metaverse
According to Daniel Macro, the Covid-19 pandemic has greatly contributed to the democratization of this concept of the digital economy. And give, in particular, the example of Europe, which undertook to digitize the energy agreement, as well as other digital agreements. Since 2014, this man has been in charge of the government’s SmartCatalonia strategy, which aims to make Catalonia the leading “smart country”on the world stage. With the help of blockchain and the metaverse, the minister is working on a fully digital economy, inspired in many ways by the physical world.
This Catalan metaverse has been called the Cataverse: “The Cataverse will be linked to the Catalan language and Catalan culture. This is what we want to have in this metaverse so that the Catalan entities that do things for culture can do it in the metaverse.”

The Catalan Minister of Innovation also returned to the government’s plans to turn Barcelona into a true digital hub. This requires talent, whether it be attracting or training: “We have a very strict policy on attracting talent from universities, as well as qualification programs such as boot camps and other events, because we need different profiles.”
The blockchain should also be visible to as many people as possible, including tourists. In Barcelona, several projects are moving in this direction, including one dedicated to health and others dedicated to public transport.
