A long requested feature is here. With the Captaincy update, players can now name or rename their ships as Sea Of Thieves. Before we get to that, learn how to buy a ship, customize its look, and give it an awesome new name.
How to buy a ship in Sea Of Thieves
- Make sure you have updated your game to Season 7. Then click “Start Game”.
- Click Play.
- In the Choose Your Experience section, click Adventure.
- Click My Ships. Here you can buy ships to own and sail as a captain, gaining privileges and rewards.
- Then click “Buy a ship”in the “Buy a ship with a captain”section.
- Now select the ship type. You have the following options: Galleon (Number of crew: 4), Chestplate (Number of crew: 2-3) and Sloop (Number of crew: 1-2).
Ship types
The galleon is a large, well-armed ship. The Brigantine is a medium-sized, combat-ready ship, while the Sloop is a small, maneuverable magazine with limited firepower and crew space. Make sure you have enough gold because you need a lot of money to buy a ship.
Ship prices in Sea of Thieves:
- Sloop: 250,000 gold.
- Chestplate: 375,000 gold.
- Galleon: 500,000 gold

How to name and rename a Sea Of Thieves ship
After you click on your ship type, you will be prompted to name your ship. As you know, the name of the ship gives it individuality, character. The name can scare opponents or make them laugh. So, to choose your name at this point, just press the Enter key on PC/A on Xbox. Enter the desired name and press “Submit”or press the “Enter”key / press “A”.
How to change ship name
To rename your ship to Sea Of Thieves, you must purchase a Renaming Document from the Pirate Shop, so make sure you choose your name wisely.
Whenever you feel like you want to rename your ship, select it and under Options, look for the Rename option. From here you can move forward with the renaming document.

- Max: 20 symbols
- Cannot contain numbers
- Cannot start or end with a space
- Certain special characters cannot be used
