How to Listen to Apple Music Offline on Apple Devices

Apple Music is a popular music streaming service that provides us with many songs and features such as lossless Hi-Res and Spatial Audio (with Dolby Atmos). This takes our music listening experience to a whole new level, but it also requires a huge amount of data. Luckily, Apple Music can also work offline.

And I have developed an article to help you download and listen to your favorite Apple Music tracks offline on your iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. So let’s get started.

Listen to Apple Music Offline on iPhone and iPad

  1. Open the Music app on your iOS device.
  2. Navigate to the song you want to download.
  3. Tap the three horizontal dots next to it and select Add to Library. Once a song has been added to your library, you can download it with one click.
  4. Click on the horizontal dots again and select Download.

Downloading tracks one at a time can be tedious, but can you upload all your music to Apple Music at once? Well, thankfully, yes, and here’s how:

  1. Navigate to the playlist you want to download.
  2. Click on the Plus (+) icon that appears in the upper right corner. You will notice that the Plus (+) icon will change to a Download icon.
  3. Click on the download icon and it will start downloading.

To automate the download process: Settings app → Music → scroll down → Automatic downloads → Enable.

Download Apple Music songs to your Mac

  1. Launch the Music app on your Mac and navigate to the song you want to download.
  2. Tap the Plus (+) icon next to it and it will add the song to the library. Now that the song has been added to the library, you will notice that when you hover over the song, a download icon will appear.
  3. Click the download button and the songs will be available offline.

Just like with iPhone, you can also download full Apple Music playlist on Mac. Not only that, you can also automate this. On a Mac, go to the Music app → Menu Bar → Music → Preferences → General → Automatic Download → Enable.

Use Apple Music Offline on Apple Watch

You can listen to Apple Music from your Apple Watch via AirPods or any other Bluetooth headphones or speakers without your iPhone nearby.

  1. Go to the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Make sure you’re on the My Watch tab, scroll down and select Music.
  3. Click “Add Music”highlighted with a Plus (+) icon. It will prompt you for your Apple Music library.
  4. Select songs to download to Apple Watch.

Once downloaded to Apple Watch, you can stream it to Airpods directly from it. This is also without internet connection.

How to Download Apple Music with Smart Playlists

Are you tired of adding songs to your Apple Music library one by one and downloading them? We’ll have your back! Create a playlist of your favorite songs using the built-in Apple Music Smart Playlists feature. Smart Playlist curation is currently limited to Apple Music in the macOS iTunes store on Windows.

Follow this article for a detailed guide on creating smart playlists with Apple Music. When you’re done creating a playlist, see the section above where we mentioned how you can download playlists to your iPhone with just a couple of clicks.

Download all your music from iTunes to your iPhone with a USB cable.

These steps will be helpful for those who have purchased music stored in iTunes and want to listen to it offline. In addition, you will need a Mac or Windows computer with iTunes installed.

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer or Mac.
  2. Launch the Music app on your Mac (or the iTunes app on Windows). You will notice that your iPhone appears under Devices in the Music app.
  3. If you already have some tracks on your iPhone, you can transfer them by simply right-clicking the iPhone switch and selecting “Transfer Purchases”.
  4. Now go to the Finder app on your Mac and tap on your iPhone that appears under Locations.
  5. Select the Music tab and turn on Sync Music.
  6. Switch either your entire music library or selected artists, albums, genres and playlists, depending on your needs.
  7. Click “Sync”and your tracks will start syncing across your iPhone and Mac.
