Samsung has just reported a new cybersecurity incident. If the intrusion in early March allowed hackers to get the source code of Galaxy devices, then this time the attackers managed to get a certain amount of personal information related to the customers of the South Korean giant.

The company explains that social security numbers and credit and debit card numbers are not affected. That being said, the incident “may have affected information such as names, contacts and demographics, dates of birth and product registrations.”The company did not disclose the number of customers potentially affected by this data breach. However, the giant warned some of them directly by email.

Samsung explains that at the end of July last year, a certain person managed to gain unauthorized access to its systems. In early August, his teams determined that an attacker had obtained customer data, but their devices had not been affected. The company explains that it has taken a number of steps to secure its systems and uses a third-party cybersecurity company. The South Korean giant is also in direct contact with the authorities.

In the FAQ, Samsung clarifies that customers do not need to perform any transactions on their side, based on the current survey results. In any case, the company reminds users to proceed with caution if they receive any unsolicited emails and that they do not hesitate to check their account for possible signs of suspicious activity.

“We work day in and day out to protect the safety and privacy of our customers,” such as implementing a recovery mode to protect data when a device is sent in for repair, explains Samsung. “We will continue to work hard to develop and implement the next steps, both immediate and long-term, to further improve the security of all our systems.”
