Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake reportedly on hold indefinitely

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake in danger? Aspyr would put the project on hold indefinitely.

You may never be able to play the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake for PlayStation 5. Or at least not for very long. Its development has been put on hold indefinitely, according to Bloomberg. Sony announced last year that Aspyr Media, known for its video game ports, was working on a remake of the BioWare classic. By that time, Aspyr had been working on it for three years and had attracted several industry veterans, as well as several people who had worked on the original game. It all sounded very promising, but today the future of the game is very uncertain.

Apparently, Aspyr had to finish a demo of the game, which she was supposed to show to Lucasfilm and Sony on June 30th. The developers were very satisfied with their work. However, a week later, the company fired chief designer Brad Prince and art director Jason Minor. On his LinkedIn page, Jason Minor lists an end date as June 2022, and his avatar currently reads “#Opentowork.”

In July, Aspyr reportedly held a series of meetings about the situation to inform staff that the demo in question is not what it would like to be and that the project is de facto on hold. The studio is also reported to have told its employees that the company is currently looking for new contracts and development opportunities.

While the reasons for the firing of Brad Prince and Jason Minor and the hiatus from the project are currently unclear, one Bloomberg source suggests that the studio spent too much time and money making this demo. If that’s the case, continuing like this until the end of the game would be impractical. Bloomberg also explains that the schedule will be another point of controversy. Aspyr told its partners that the game could be released in late 2022, but a more realistic date would be 2025.

Some Aspyr employees now believe that Saber Interactive, which is also working on the project, can take over. Aspyr also launched Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II on the Nintendo Switch in June. The game had a bug that prevented players from completing it, but a patch was released in July.
