Twitter is raising the price of a Blue subscription. It’s $3 to $5 a month.

Existing subscribers will continue to pay $3 until next October. In an email posted by consultant Matt Navarra and spotted by The Verge, the company explains that current subscribers will be notified at least 30 days before the rate hike goes into effect on their own account.

The company did not elaborate on the reasons for the price increase, saying in an email that it will help Twitter develop new features requested by subscribers, improve existing ones, and continue its mission to support journalism. The company also explains that it is working to create “an even smoother reading experience”and will also launch new experimental features on Twitter Blue Labs for those who remain a follower after the price increase.

Last November, Twitter launched its subscription service in the United States, a subscription service that allows the most frequent users to unlock certain features. In its financial report for the second quarter of 2022, Twitter notes a noticeable increase in the number of users on its site. The bad news is that it doesn’t lead to more revenue. Twitter did post a net loss of $270 million, a loss it attributes to the global economic situation and the uncertainty surrounding the Elon Musk takeover. The latter did make a $44 billion takeover bid last April, an offer the company quickly accepted, but things have gotten more complicated since then. In July, Twitter sued Elon Musk after he tried to quit. Today, both sides are preparing to face each other in court next October.
