The replacement has been updated to version 2.3.0 with preliminary support for iOS 15 and 16.

Replace, the main tweaking method used by jailbreak users checkra1n and unc0ver received an unexpected update to version 2.3.0 on Tuesday.

Referring to the changelog on Sam Bingner’s description page, Substitute v2.3.0 adds the following changes:

  • Added support for iOS and iPadOS 15 and iOS and iPadOS 16.
  • Fix PAC support on iOS and iPadOS 15.

Particularly interesting is that the update provides support not only for iOS and iPadOS 15, but also for iOS and iPadOS 16. Currently, Odyssey Team’s upcoming Cheyote jailbreak for iOS and iPadOS 15.0-15.1.1 is one of the few known jailbreaks in development. for iOS and iPadOS 15, except for checkra1n of course.

Currently, absolutely no one has confirmed that they are working on jailbreaking iOS and iPadOS 16, and iOS and iPadOS 16 are not even available as public software updates as they continue to go through a beta testing period with developers and public beta testers for the fall. release schedule for this year.

Another interesting point is that the upcoming Cheyote jailbreak will use libhooker to inject tweaks and not Substitute, which certainly makes some wonder why Substitute is only now getting an update. There was no word from the unc0ver team about jailbreaking iOS and iPadOS 15, nor was there any hint that the checkra1n team is getting close to release.

So should you upgrade if you’re an existing Substitute user? We usually say yes, but there are a growing number of complaints on Discord and /r/jailbreak suggesting that this update breaks the implementation of tweaks for existing jailbreaks. With that in mind, it would be a good idea to wait with this until the bugs are fixed.
