The new iOS 16 update was released on September 12, 2022, and there are several iPhone models that didn’t make the list. And for the first time, the iPod touch is completely removed from the compatibility list.
When iOS 15 came out, it supported every device that its predecessor, iOS 14, supported. But the same cannot be said between iOS 16 and iOS 15. The iPod touch (7th gen) has finally dropped major new updates, which isn’t surprising considering that Apple discontinued the iPod line in May 2022.
The biggest news is that five iPhone models with a Home button can no longer be updated to the latest iOS 15 software. Only four iPhone models with a Home button and Touch ID remain that can be updated to iOS 16: iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone SE (3rd generation), iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus.
It’s always possible that the surviving home button models will be removed in the next major iOS 17 update, but it’s too early to tell. In the meantime, here’s the full list of devices that iOS 16 does and does not support:
