It may happen that the CD gets stuck in the PS5 drive. And here is the drama. Luckily, fixing the problem is pretty easy.
If you’ve spent an extra $100 on a PS5 with a disc drive, you don’t want a stuck CD turning it into a PS5 Digital Edition. But trouble can always happen. Luckily, there are two ways to fix the problem and free up the drive. One is easier than the other.
We already had a chance to cover this topic for PS4, and for this console, you can test up to five different methods. Luckily, a stuck drive doesn’t require a complicated diagnosis: the problem is with the drive, and in the end, removing the culprit manually is pretty easy. To do this, Sony built a shortcut into the player, but this is not a guaranteed solution. If that doesn’t work, there’s a slightly more complicated option that requires opening the player itself.
“Easy”way
This is what you should check first if you can. As explained in this What Happens When video, you must turn off your PS5 completely first. Do nothing if it is connected to the network. Then remove the bottom plate from the machine. And then all you have to do is use a screwdriver to turn the screw covered with the black sticker clockwise, this will push what is stuck out of the reader.
If it works like in the video, you’ll be saved in minutes.
The “hard”way
A trickier method certainly solves the problem, but requires some effort. According to repair center manual CD247, the start is the same, but instead of manually moving the drive with a screwdriver, you have to disassemble the PS5 case piece by piece. This method will void your warranty as you will have to remove the security seal from the console. If you want to keep your warranty, stop there and take your PS5 to an authorized repair center.
If you still want to continue, you need to remove the drive. You open it, unplug the two wires from the board, and then carefully lift the cover that’s still attached to unscrew the last barrier between you and the stuck drive.
You can then remove the drive and put everything back in order, screw by screw. However, CD247 recommends checking that the mechanism that swallows and spits out the CD is working. You can take the opportunity to apply some WD40. Take the opportunity to clean all the bowels of the console. Beware of the laser. If it is corrupted, you will no longer be able to read your discs.
