Apple headset content could become a metaverse

We hate the word “metaverse”as much as you do. If Apple provides its own version of the metaverse for mixed reality headset rumors, you can bet that Apple executives won’t utter that nonsensical phrase to sell this thing. But one thing is certain. An Apple headset released in early 2023 is rumored to be getting a few inches closer, and Apple is hiring engineers to help it create content for the product.

According to one advertised job posting spotted by Bloomberg ‘s Mark Gurman, early adopters will be able to explore a 3D mixed reality world.

You’ll work closely with Apple’s UI platform, UI designers, and system capabilities teams to push you to think outside the box and solve incredibly complex and interesting 3D application challenges.

Another list of vacancies relates to the video service.

The listings also imply that Apple wants to create a headset video service with 3D content that can be played in virtual reality. This follows a 2020 acquisition by NextVR, which has partnered with artists and professional sports leagues to bring VR content to headsets.

There will also be games.

The company is looking for a software vendor with experience in visual effects and game asset pipelines that can create digital content for augmented and virtual reality environments.

Apple’s headset is rumored to allow users to immerse themselves in virtual or augmented reality.

AR versions of Messages, FaceTime and Maps

All of this content will be added to mixed reality versions of core Apple apps like Messages, FaceTime and Maps. Gurman notes that internal work on the first version of Reality OS, codenamed Oak, is being completed. The software should be ready for Apple’s headset release next year.

Recent employees point to other uses for the headset, such as productivity and health. Read: How to add, rearrange, duplicate, and delete pages in Pages on Mac

Apple’s headset should be powered by the M2 chip and have more than 10 internal and external cameras for eye tracking, motion gestures and other features. It is said to be running a new custom operating system dubbed RealityOS. The product is supposedly very thin and light. Apple’s headset is expected to feature the highest resolution micro-OLED displays on the market.

All this advanced equipment can be expensive. The Apple Headset will be an expensive accessory costing between $2,000 and $3,000. Apple may position it as a high-end device for development purposes and early adopters until a more affordable version joins it.
