Grammy Awards: Video game music will take center stage in 2023

Video games will now take their place at the Grammy Awards.

For years, video games and other interactive media have competed with movie, program or television soundtracks in the Best Visual Media Soundtrack category at the Grammy Awards, but no video game soundtrack has ever been nominated in this category. The main reason is that the ratings of films and series that dominated this category for a long time were too high. To recognize the artistic dimension of video games, the category “Best Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media”was specifically created.

A new addition to the 65th #GRAMMY Awards for Best Score for Video Games and Other Interactive Media honors composers who champion musical innovation in games.

Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of The Recording Academy said:

This is a huge opportunity because so much music is created and used in games. I think there is as much music in video games as there is in movies and TV – or even combined. So this is an opportunity to connect with an underserved and underrepresented group of music makers that we haven’t noticed until now. The numbers are huge and there are so many really creative and talented people working in this field that we thought it was very important to make sure we honor their work.

The 2023 Grammy Awards, the 65th edition hosted by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, will recognize the best soundtrack albums composed primarily of original scores and created specifically for video games in the new Best Score for Video Games and Other Interactive Media category. or other interactive media or as an accompaniment to them.
