Weather app in iOS 16.2 launches integration with Apple News
The Weather app in iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, and macOS Ventura 13.1 integrates with Apple News, allowing you to follow local weather updates without using the News app or going to a news site.
Relevant weather-related news appears in the new News tile below the 10-day forecast on iPhone, one article at a time. The actual story you see depends on the city currently selected in the app. Read: How to set up the macOS News app
For example, someone checking the weather forecast for San Francisco might see the headline of a San Francisco Chronicle article about weather changes in the Bay Area. A headline tap follows the Apple News base URL that leads to that online news article if you don’t have the News app installed. If the user has the News app, the story opens in it.
Does this mean that ads will appear in Weather?
This feature first appears in the second beta of iOS 16.1. At the moment there doesn’t seem to be a way to turn it off. Some people suspect that this may be Apple’s way of putting ads in the Weather app.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported on Apple’s plans to make more money from ads. Clearly, the company’s advertising division wants to triple its revenue, and we’ve already seen how – Apple recently expanded search ads in the Today section of the App Store and at the bottom of app pages. Apple can also serve search ads in the Maps app and add ads to the Books and Podcasts apps.
Where is the Apple News weather integration available?
The Weather app in iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, and macOS Ventura 13.1 supports US news integration. This feature may expand to other markets where Apple News is available, including Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
When will this feature be launched?
Apple News integration in Weather will come as part of the launch of iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, and macOS Ventura, which is expected around mid-December.
When these updates are removed, you can use the Apple Software Update feature in Settings to download and install them on your devices. With iOS 16.2 installed, you will be able to read the latest news in the Weather app, provided your city is supported.
