Spotify is updating its Apple Watch app, but you’ll be disappointed

Spotify is (finally) offering a new version of its Apple Watch app. New, sure, but nothing special.

Spotify has decided to give Apple Watch owners a small gift by offering an update to their connected Apple Watch app, mainly to adapt to larger screens. In the update, which began just recently, users will be able to get a streamlined look for their library, as well as improved integrated music controls and the ability to download playlists without going back to their iPhone.

Spotify is (finally) offering a new version of its Apple Watch app

Before today’s update, Spotify’s functionality on Apple Watch was fairly basic. The library view only displayed a list of text titles. From now on you have the right to a jacket. In the old version of the watchOS app, as soon as you tapped on an album or playlist, it immediately started playing. You now have a screen to download or select shuffle.

Spotify added offline playback in an update last May, but this version still required you to use your iPhone to select music offline, and you could only download individual tracks to the watch. It would be nice to be able to download entire playlists and albums without taking out your phone. The new update also lets you swipe on a song from the list to like it, a gesture familiar to users of the Spotify iOS app.

The latest update also improves podcast playback, allowing you to see the progress of the playback and pick up where you left off. The previous version rebooted from the beginning each time.

New of course, but nothing special

Along with updates to its Apple Watch app, Spotify is also rolling out new controls for Ray-Ban Stories Meta and music selection for Delta Airlines passengers. The company also announced support for “Ambient Experience,”which displays creative art for playlists or podcasts on the Fire TV Omni QLED series when you’re not watching anything else, of course. Owners of these TVs can view their music using the remote control or Spotify Connect devices.
