Amazon Prime Video Greenlights Blade Runner 2099 TV Series

Blade Runner 2099 takes place 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049.

Ridley Scott (The Counselor, The Martian, The House of Gucci), who directed the original 1982 film Blade Runner, is the executive producer of the Blade Runner 2099 television series, which will replace the 2017 feature film Blade Runner 2049 year under the direction of Denis Villeneuve (Maelström, Sicario, Dune). Louise Silka (Strange Angel, The Shining Girls, Halo) wrote and executive produced Blade Runner 2099, which is produced by Alcon Entertainment in association with Scott Free Productions and Amazon Studios. The project, which marks the first Blade Runner live-action series, was in priority development at Amazon Studios.

Vernon Sanders, head of television production at Amazon Studios, said:

The original Blade Runner directed by Ridley Scott is considered one of the greatest and most influential sci-fi films of all time, and we’re thrilled to bring Blade Runner 2099 to our subscribers. We are honored to present the continuation of the Blade Runner franchise and we are confident that by teaming with Ridley Scott, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions and the incredibly talented Silka Louise, Blade Runner 2099 will retain the intelligence, themes and spirit of its predecessors..

The Blade Runner universe will expand

In the sequel to the 1982 film Blade Runner, set in 2049, Ryan Gosling plays the role of a Blade Runner who uncovers a secret that threatens to destabilize society. Harrison Ford and Edward James Olmos reprise their roles from the original and also star as Ana de Armas, Dave Batista and Jared Leto. As the title of Blade Runner 2099 suggests, the latest entry in the neo-noir sci-fi franchise will take place 50 years after Blade Runner 2049.

Alcon Entertainment co-CEOs and co-founders Andrew Kosov and Broderick Johnson added:

We are happy to continue our working relationship with our Amazon friends. And we’re thrilled to continue expanding the Blade Runner world into a new dimension thanks to the provocative storyline created by Silka Louise. Audiences discovered Ridley Scott’s brilliant vision of Blade Runner 40 years ago, and the film has since become one of the most influential sci-fi films of all time. Denis Villeneuve’s sequel Blade Runner 2049 has become one of the most popular sequels of all time. Therefore, we understand that the bar for this new component is very high. Together with Silka Louise and our partners at Amazon and Scott Free Productions, we hope to introduce and delight viewers with the next generation of Blade Runner.
