American Airlines orders 20 Overture supersonic aircraft from Boom. 40 more may follow. Supersonic is making a comeback, at least in the United States.
Air transport has developed a lot in recent decades. Today, in terms of pure innovation, the period is quite calm, but the industry still has supersonic aircraft at its disposal, although, according to some, they are used too little. However, an American airline may “restart”the technology. Explanation.
American Airlines orders 20 Overture supersonic jets from Boom
One of the largest airlines in the world decided to bet, and in a big way, on the startup Boom, which specializes in supersonic aircraft. A few days ago, American Airlines, always at the forefront of technology, announced its intention to purchase at least 20 Boom Overture aircraft, with an option to buy 40 more if all goes well. The contract is one of Boom’s largest to date, a huge leap in confidence, surpassing the 50 potential aircraft order placed by United Airlines last year. This is a very good omen for a startup that does not yet have an operational airliner.
40 more may follow
Earlier this year, Boom announced plans to build a manufacturing facility in North Carolina near the Piedmont Triad International Airport. Normally, the company should start construction on its “Overture Superfactory”in a few months, which could start production in 2024. Meanwhile, the first aircraft should not leave the assembly line until 2026.
Supersonic is making a big comeback, at least in the United States.
However, that hasn’t stopped Boom from being optimistic about Overture’s prospects. The company already estimates that its Mach 1.7 aircraft could connect Newark to London in less than 4 hours and San Francisco to Tokyo in about 6 hours. The company also claims that the Overture will be a “zero carbon”aircraft due to its ability to fly on 100% green fuel.
