Apple routinely adds some of its old and obsolete products to its vintage list. In the latest piece of news, Apple has added the 2017 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar to the list of vintage products. As per Apple’s website, products are considered vintage when the company stops shipping them for sale for at least 5 years but less than 7 years ago.
Vintage products should not be confused with the Obsolete products category, which is another category of products in Apple’s textbook. Apple defines obsolete products as those products that have been stopped by Apple for distribution for sale for more than 7 years.
Vintage products are no longer eligible for repairs at Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers and there is no guarantee that its repair parts will be available.
As reported by MacRumors, today, MacBook Pro 13-inch and 15-inch with Touch Bar that were released in 2017 have been added to the list of Vintage products. This is the second generation of MacBook Pro-s that came with Touch Bar.
Previously, Apple added the 2016 MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar to the list of vintage products.
First-generation MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar were quite notorious for failing butterfly keyboard. Apple later recalled the faulty units and acknowledged that its new Butterfly keyboard design was causing issues.
While 2017 MacBook Pro models with Touch Bar are now considered vintage, the same models without Touch Bar and just two Thunderbolt ports have not been added to the list yet. They are still eligible for service and repair for 1 year before they are added to the Vintage list.
Moreover, macOS Sonoma, the latest macOS announced at WWDC 2023, will support MacBooks that were released in or after 2018.
