Apple may owe you money if AppleCare gave you refurbished replacement devices instead of new ones

As part of the settlement of AppleCare’s longstanding $95 million refurbished class action lawsuit, payments will soon start flowing to eligible customers.

  • What is happening? Apple admitted that it provided customers with refurbished replacement devices instead of brand new hardware, violating AppleCare’s terms. In 2021, the company agreed to a $95 settlement of the case. Eligible customers are now informed about upcoming payments.
  • Why care? Apple may owe you money if you purchased AppleCare or AppleCare+ for your iPhone or iPad after July 20, 2012 and received a refurbished device instead of a new one as a replacement.
  • What to do? Keep an eye on your mailbox! If you are eligible to receive payment, you will receive an email by August 30, 2022 with a link to request payment electronically. The deadline for applying for payment is November 28, 2022.

Payments go to AppleCare claim repaired

If you qualify, there is no need to complete any requirement forms.

You should have received an email from the Village Administrator with information about how you would be reimbursed if you were issued a replacement AppleCare or AppleCare+ device that was repaired and not brand new.

Those who are eligible to receive payments will receive a payment notification email with a link to request payment electronically. The email should reach your inbox by August 30, 2022, so be sure to keep an eye on your spam folders for the next couple of days.

“After you receive this email, you will have until November 28, 2022 to claim payment,” it says. For more information visit www.ReplacementDeviceLawsuit.com.

What are refurbished Apple devices?

Refurbished Apple devices are underused products, including those returned by customers and demo devices you see in Apple retail stores.

Apple sells refurbished devices at a special discount of up to fifteen percent on its online refurbished store at apple.com/shop/refurbished.

Apple says every refurbished device is covered by the company’s standard one-year warranty and comes with a brand new battery. Refurbished iOS devices also come with a new outer shell so they don’t show any signs of cosmetic damage.
