Apple patents foldable split-screen device that can be used as a laptop

Apple has reportedly received a patent for a foldable laptop-like display. A patent was issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a double folding device. The images and document details mentioned in the patent suggest that the device has two displays that can be used simultaneously or one at a time. Patent images unearthed by Apple Patently suggest that a future Apple product could be similar to the Microsoft Surface Neo. It’s worth noting that the Surface Neo was unveiled at the 2019 Microsoft Surface event but is not yet available for purchase. In the meantime, let’s take a closer look at Apple’s double-foldable device patent.

Apple patent for a device similar to the Surface Neo

Apple could be working on a split-screen device that folds in half or doubles like a laptop, according to a USPTO-issued patent. The images show that the two screens are located on a flexible body, which may have its own internal hinge. When unfolded, the screens sit side by side, providing a large display area. Alternatively, users can fold it in half by folding one side of the device upright, offering laptop-like performance. The device is likely to be equipped with various cameras and sensors that can detect orientation and switch to different software modes.

Although this is an Apple patent, it does not guarantee that the company will release a double-fold device. Apple has been rumored in the past to release a foldable device. However, according to rumors online, the company does not appear to be planning to launch it until at least 2023.

Companies such as Samsung, Xiaomi, etc. have already released foldable smartphones. Other Chinese OEMs such as Vivo, Realme, OnePlus are also rumored to be working on their version of the foldable smartphone. Apple may be working on something that will likely replace the iPad and offer the capabilities of a laptop rather than necessarily a smartphone-tablet.
