Apple is posting a guide to its private iCloud relay to learn all about the feature.
One of the great features introduced by Apple in iOS 15 is iCloud Private Relay. It works just like a VPN in that it protects your online identity, but it’s not a VPN per se. This explains why the Cupertino-based company does not qualify this service as a VPN. That being said, the feature is still in beta, but the American giant recently released a comprehensive guide to the service.
Apple publishes guide to its private iCloud relay
For those who don’t know, iCloud Private Relay allows you to hide your online identity. According to the guide from Apple in question, the principle is as follows: the system sends your request through two different relays. By sending this way to two different destinations, your identification information cannot be collected into a single entity to compile data relating to you.
To know all about this feature
This means that if you are not comfortable with the idea that your internet activity is being harassed, in particular by certain tech giants, which in turn allows you to provide highly personalized targeted ads and other marketing campaigns with the sole purpose of getting you spend money, then iCloud Private Relay can be a very interesting answer to this problem. That being said, the system is not perfect, it is still in beta testing and there are still a number of bugs. Some time ago, for example, it was still getting the user’s IP “hidden”behind that private iCloud relay.
The guide also highlights certain specific situations in which iCloud Private Relay may not work, such as when the device is connected to a computer or if you are connected to your corporate network and said network’s settings take precedence over iCloud Private Relay.
