Apple to not hold October event; iPad Air to be introduced via press release: Gurman

We are just a day away from Apple’s Wonderlust event. It is known that Apple will introduce the new iPhone 15 series, Apple Watch Series 9, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 at the event. If you are expecting the Cupertino-giant to announce new iPads at the September 12 event, you are in for a big disappointment.

No Apple event in October

At the latest episode of The MacRumors Show, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has cleared that Apple will not announce any new iPad at the Wonderlust event. In addition to this, Gurman has also said that it is unlikely that Apple will host an event in October for launching new iPads.

The company does not have enough products that warrant an event. Currently, Apple has a new and refreshed iPad Air model in the works, and as per Gurman, it is “coming soonish.” Apple might announce the new iPad Air in October but the company will not hold an event for the announcement.

Instead, the new iPad Air could be introduced via a press release. Apple has previously adopted a similar approach with M2 Pro and M2 Pro Max MacBooks that were released earlier this year via press release.

He said, “I’m not sure they have enough to drag people down to Cupertino to watch the video like they do for this [iPhone 15] launch”

If we look at the history, Apple usually holds an event in the month of October to announce new Macs and iPad models. Gurman mentioned in the podcast that iPad Pro is not expected until next year.

Moreover, noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported yesterday that M3 MacBook models are not expected until the end of this year.

iPad lineup due for an upgrade

According to the latest report, iPad Pro 12.9-inch is no longer Apple’s most popular iPad. The iPad Pro 11-inch has now overtaken the 12.9-inch iPad to become Apple’s most-selling iPad model in the quarter ending June 2023.

This indicates that Apple’s iPad product lineup has aged and the most loyal customers, who jump at the latest models, have already upgraded. The new customers, on the other hand, are moving towards the cheaper options as they are unsure of the utility of the product in their lifestyle.

The report is a clear indicator that Apple’s entire iPad lineup is due for an upgrade. It is rumored that the upcoming iPad Pro will bring a major overhaul. Upcoming iPad Pro models will arrive with the new M3 chip and OLED displays, making them Apple’s first iPads with OLED display.
