Bonnie Ross leaves 343 Industries

The founder of 343 Industries is retiring after 15 years as head of an American studio to tackle a family medical problem.

A proud spokeswoman for the women’s movement in the video game industry, Bonnie Ross was also the main person responsible for the Halo license after Microsoft and Bungie split to create 343 Industries. Despite being attached to the sci-fi FPS, she decided to move on:

While I was hoping to stay with Halo until the release of the Halo Infinite winter update, I would like to let you know that I will be leaving 343 Industries soon to attend to a family medical issue. I am incredibly proud of the work of all the staff on Halo Infinite, the Master Chief Collection, the Halo TV series and more. It has been my honor to serve alongside the team for the past 15 years and be part of the world that I love. Thanks to everyone in the Halo community for your support. Halo has a bright future. I can’t wait to show you what we’ve got and cheer on as a fan during the Halo World Cup next October!

Microsoft reacts to the departure of Bonnie Ross

Bonnie Ross has worked in Microsoft’s video game department for almost thirty years on franchises like Gears of War and Alan Wake, and even games like Jade Empire and Mass Effect. She is best known for taking the reins of 343 Industries after delivering her vision for Halo to a corporate climate that made the franchise appear to be in decline. Before and after founding 343 Industries, Bonnie Ross and her team collaborated on several popular titles, including Halo 3: ODST, Halo Reach, Halo Anniversary, Halo Spartan Assault/Strike, and Halo Wars 2.

Microsoft says:

After over 28 years in video games at Microsoft, including 15 years at the head of 343 Industries and Halo, Bonnie Ross will leave Microsoft and spend more time with her family. We are grateful to him for leading 343 Industries to launch Halo 4, Halo 5, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the Halo TV series, and Halo Infinite. We wish him all the best.

After the departure of Bonnie Ross, 343 Industries is restructuring.

Despite numerous layoffs, Microsoft has announced that as of today, Pierre Hintze, production manager at 343 Industries, will take over the studio. Brian Kosky, formerly of Halo marketing, will serve as the franchise’s general manager, while Elizabeth Van Wyck, head of business, operations and esports, will oversee all business and operations.
