Apple has updated its Boot Camp software to add WPA3 support for Wi-Fi connections. It also contains a fix for Bluetooth driver issues.
- What is happening? Boot Camp is an Apple program that allows you to run Microsoft’s Windows operating system on Mac computers with Intel processors. In its latest version, Boot Camp has received support for much more secure WPA3 wireless connections. In addition, the update contains fixes for issues with the Bluetooth driver.
- Why care? If you’re using Boot Camp but don’t care about better wireless network security, you might be interested in the fact that the app fixes a Bluetooth driver issue that can occur when resuming from sleep or hibernation.
- What to do? Boot Windows on your Mac, then click the Start menu and open the Apple Software Update app to install the new Boot Camp drivers.
Boot Camp Adds WPA3 Support, Fixes Bluetooth Issues
Apple released this update on August 22, 2022, increasing the version number to 6.1.16.
The release notes accompanying the update say that Boot Camp 6.1.16 fixes Bluetooth driver issues that can occur after your Windows Mac wakes up from sleep or hibernation via Boot Camp.
This Boot Camp update also adds WPA3 authentication protocol compatibility for Wi-Fi networks.
When will Boot Camp support Windows 11?
Boot Camp does not currently work with Windows 11. Apple has never said if Boot Camp plans to support Windows 11, but Microsoft has said it is mostly up to Apple. Apple’s silicon version of Boot Camp will allow people to install and use the ARM version of Windows 11 on Apple’s silicon Mac.
Given that all Macs now run on Apple’s own silicon rather than Intel chips, there is little incentive for Apple to invest resources into making Boot Camp compatible with its own Mac processors. Read: How to tell if your Mac is using Intel or Apple chips
Virtualization is the only solution for people who want to run Windows on their silicon Apple Macs. With virtualization applications like VMWare and Parallels Desktop, you can run Windows 11 in a macOS window, drag and drop items between the two platforms, and more.
