Activision Blizzard just released its 2021 annual report and it has been revealed that Call of Duty Mobile has been downloaded over 650 million times. The publisher says this has been a record year for Call of Duty: Mobile since its launch in China, with annual consumer spending on the game well in excess of $1 billion.
It’s safe to say that COD: Mobile has been a huge hit for Activision so far, and they plan to double that with the release of Warzone for mobile soon enough. The report also mentions that the number of people playing COD: Mobile each month matches the number of console/PC players in 2021.
It’s a huge feat for the game and signals to both publisher and fans that the future of the franchise on mobile looks bright.
Call of Duty: Mobile hits 650 million downloads in 2021
The mobile gaming space is only about to get even more competitive with the likes of EA’s Apex Legends Mobile set to launch soon and Valorant heading to the mobile platform. Activision, though, looks like they’re keeping their finger on the pulse as they continue to push further into the mobile space with upcoming titles like Warzone for mobile.
The free-to-play Battle Royale Warzone was key to COD’s success on consoles and PC last year and continues to be a major source of revenue for the franchise. In terms of new releases, Infinity Ward has finally announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, set to release in 2022.
Even though Vanguard hasn’t been able to pull off the expected results from COD games, the franchise is still pretty strong. Infinity Ward has had a string of hits, and 2019’s Modern Warfare has become one of the strongest games in the series. Fan reaction to the announcement of the sequel has been overwhelmingly positive, which should be a sign that good things are ahead of us.
