CD Projekt Red has finally broken radio silence regarding a new The Witcher Saga game, confirming that a new game is currently in development at the studio. The game will be a new part of The Witcher series and will be developed on Unreal Engine 5.
This is very curious, since almost the entire catalog of CDPR games was developed on the proprietary REDengine engine . The decision to move to Unreal Engine 5 also stems from a longstanding strategic partnership with Unreal Engine owner Epic Games.
According to the studio’s blog post, the multi-year deal goes beyond licensing as CDPR will also work closely with Epic Games developers to help tailor the engine for an “open world experience.”
CD Projekt Red confirms a new Witcher game is in development
Along with the news of a new Witcher game, the studio has also confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 development will continue on REDengine. This development refers to expansions for the game that have yet to be released.
CDPR Global PR Director Radek Grabowski later tweeted confirming some of the details regarding the new Witcher game. This came amid rumors that the game is an Epic Games Store exclusive or a direct sequel to Wild Hunt.
This is truly exciting news as fans of the franchise have been waiting for any confirmation regarding a new game in the franchise. It will be interesting to see what direction the series takes next and whether it continues the story close to where the trilogy left off, or follows a different timeline altogether.
There is no shortage of knowledge and inspiration, as the books contain ample information about both Geralt’s chronology and the past. A game set during the heyday of The Witchers in Kaer Morhen is certainly an interesting idea to explore, but CDPR has yet to comment on the new game’s story or setting.
