What is palen1x and is it worth using?

One of the latest jailbreaks available at the moment is palera1n, an exploit-based semi-tethered checkm8 bootrom jailbreak that has just been rewritten in the C programming language to improve speed and reliability. But you may have sniffed out something called palen1x?

What is palen1x?

Many people haven’t heard of palen1x yet, but it’s basically a Linux distribution that you can burn to a USB flash drive to install palera1n-c on your compatible A9-A11 phone running iOS or iPadOS 15.0-16.3. And since the flash drive is bootable, it can be used on Windows machines (any version), while palera1n or palera1n-c without palen1x are only for macOS or Linux.

If this concept sounds familiar, it’s because someone made a similar checkra1n tool called bootra1n that we showed you just over two years ago. Like bootra1n, palen1x comes as a file. iso file that you will need to properly burn to a USB stick, just like you would burn a CD. If done correctly, you can quickly press the F2 or Delete key on your keyboard during Windows PC startup to set the flash drive as a boot device in the BIOS.

Just like palera1n-c, palen1x allows you to enjoy the benefits of a jailbreak without root or root on a compatible device. The documentation doesn’t explicitly recommend mixing them on the same device, as regular users may run into issues they don’t know how to fix. Thus, you will end up wanting to choose one or the other. Obviously, non-rooted jailbreak doesn’t give access to the OS/root volume, but the palera1n team plans to drop rooting this year anyway, as this will become the modern jailbreak dynamic.

What you need to know about palen1x

Palen1x requires a freshly formatted 64 MB or larger USB flash drive or a blank CD/DVD. There are two versions of the tool available for download, including a 32-bit version and a 64-bit version; you will need to download the one that applies to the computer you plan to use it with.

Palen1x gets regular updates with bug fixes and improvements, so you need to keep an eye on the project’s release index to make sure you’re on the latest version every time you use it.

Just like palera1n andpalera1n-x,palen1x only supports the same devices with A9-A11 chips. This includes the following:

Please note that any device newer than iPhone X, such as iPhone XR or 11 series, is not supported.

Another caveat is that the iPhone X cannot be set up with a pre-jailbreak passcode. However, you can use the checkl0ck jailbreak setting to mimic the passcode and biometric user authentication on this device when it is in a jailbreak state and most people won’t notice the difference. This tweak has only recently received support for iOS 16.0-16.1.2, adding the previously added support for iOS 15.x.

Since palen1x is more of a side project of the palera1n team, it does not currently support all the features found in the full version of the palera1n-c jailbreak, including auto-injection of settings and support for passcodes on devices with an A10(X) chip. Regardless, it’s still a viable option for those who only have a Windows PC and don’t want to dual-boot Linux just to jailbreak their iPhone or iPad.

Sileo Nightly will be installed on your device as the default package manager. Sileo Nightly is a version of Sileo that is updated almost every night by lead developer Amy Wile with patches (hence the name). However, this is beta software. Only Sileo Nightly gets the latest cutting edge changes before they are officially added to the regular Sileo release channel.

Should I use palen1x?

The palen1x project is officially approved by the palera1n team, so you shouldn’t have any reservations about security. So, if you don’t have a Mac, then, of course, go for it!

One thing you might want to keep in mind is that you should not use palen1x with a virtual machine. This is explicitly mentioned on the GitHub page, and for good reason, as it can lead to errors you don’t want to see.

If you are a macOS or Linux user, you should use palera1n or palera1n-c. But if you are a Windows user, then Palen1x offers you a convenient boot from a USB stick or CD/DVD to install the palera1n jailbreak without dual booting, so it can be a valuable option for Windows users.

Another useful fact about palen1x is that it can be used with someone else’s computer without having to install software on their computer and without affecting their main operating system. This way, your friends are more likely to let you use your palen1x computer if you don’t have your own computer.

How to use Palen1x

Using palen1x is done in a few simple steps:

  1. Download the File Writer. iso like Rufus.
  2. Download the correct file. iso (32-bit or 62-bit) from the GitHub page.
  3. Connect your palera1n compatible iPhone or iPad with an MFi certified USB-A to Lightning cable.
  4. Connect a USB flash drive or insert a CD/DVD.
  5. Use Rufus or your preferred file burning tool. iso to create a bootable USB stick or CD/DVD with the file. iso palen1x.
  6. Restart your computer and enter BIOS.
  7. Use the BIOS to change the order of the boot drives to start with a USB flash drive or CD/DVD and then save the changes.
  8. Reboot the machine again.
  9. When palen1x starts, select the option palera1n from the menu list.
  10. Follow the instructions that appear to jailbreak your iPhone or iPad.
