A visibly annoyed CoolStar offered an update on the status of the upcoming Cheyote jailbreak tool for iOS and iPadOS 15.0-15.1.1 this Friday night, stating that the public release would not take place for at least another 4 weeks, or possibly even longer.
Referring to an update shared through a series of tweets, one of the main hurdles seems to be the implementation of the tweaks; this is on top of additional bugs that still need to be ironed out, as discussed by CoolStar on Thursday. The vast majority of available jailbreak tweaks still only use the Substitute APIs, while Cheyote will use the libhooker version that stays within the non-root dynamic.
CoolStar says that for years it has been pushing for more jailbreak tweak developers to move to the libhooker-based API, but most developers seem to be slower than they’d like. In addition, both users and developers continue to use what CoolStar calls “outdated”software, citing things like Cydia and Substitute as examples:
In continuation of the explanation, CoolStar noted that even if the iOS and iPadOS 15 jailbreak comes out sooner rather than later, less than four known jailbreak tweaks will work properly on it at this time. Having said that, rushing to complete it seems moot as the developers of the jailbreak tweak didn’t have the time, or presumably even interest, to switch to a different API.
One thing we can glean from CoolStar’s tweets is that there are plans to update libhooker to work with iOS and iPadOS 15, however these new features won’t be used by jailbreak tweaks that don’t support the libhooker API. With that in mind, it seems clear that tweak developers have a lot of work to do when Cheyote launches if they plan to support releases of the jailbreak tweak on iOS and iPadOS 15.
We should point out to our readers that while CoolStar has cited four weeks as the shortest timeframe for a Cheyote jailbreak to be released, it is likely to be longer as CoolStar has discussed being busy with other, more lucrative projects, namely the ChromeOS scene.
