Crunchyroll Ends Support for Older Apple TVs

Technology is advancing and, unfortunately, customers will always be faced with the question of whether they should upgrade their devices. This decision can get a little easier when it’s something like a streaming device, and ultimately third party support is vital to keep browsing going. That’s why it can be sad to hear that another popular streaming service is ending support for older Apple TV models.

Crunchyroll, which has become the go-to source for watching anime these days, has confirmed that it will be ending support for some older Apple TV models in the wild (via 9to5Mac). The change will take effect one month later, starting September 15, 2022. When that date arrives, the Crunchyroll app will no longer support all Apple TV models.

From this date, Crunchyroll will no longer support content streaming on first, second, and third generation Apple TV models. The company notes that Crunchyroll customers will be able to stream supported iPhone and iPad models directly to Apple TV if it’s the third generation or newer. And Crunchyroll also supports AirPlay 2 streaming. Crunchyroll will continue to support Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K going forward.

So, if you’re a Crunchyroll customer and have an older model of Apple TV, it might be time to consider other options.

As mentioned above, this isn’t the first service to drop support for older Apple TVs. Back in 2020, those were HBO NOW and HBO Go, although they have expanded support beyond their original plans. And in early 2021, the MLB app also dropped support for some older Apple-branded streaming boxes.
