It appears that Dell has released a BIOS update for laptops that has broken a number of its laptops. According to a lot of user complaints, laptops are reported to crash before booting – and this only happens after a BIOS update has been released. It’s not yet clear if Dell has acknowledged the BIOS issue, but it’s likely that a fix for it will be released soon.
According to user reports, the range of Dell Inspiron and Latitude laptops that are fairly popular mainstream PC-to-Windows lineups is what makes this issue an essential one on note. Specifically, the BIOS update issue affected the Dell Inspiron 5680, Latitude 5320, and 5520 desktop computers, as well as the Alienware Aurora R8.
It’s not entirely clear what the issue is with the Dell BIOS update that could have caused the technical issue. A detailed description of the BIOS issue preventing computers from booting will most likely be published by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) before a patch is released to resolve the issue.
In this regard, Dell has not yet published a description of the problem. User reports on this issue say that even if the infected Dell laptop boots, it shuts down shortly and does not start after that.
To resolve this issue, users of affected Dell laptops can use the company’s SupportAssist OS recovery program. The latter can help users roll back the BIOS firmware version, which will help users continue using their devices in a healthy state – until the next update is released.
Updating the BIOS firmware is usually critical as it helps users keep their PCs up to date with key security patches against commonly used zero-day vulnerabilities. During recovery, users are advised to disconnect laptop batteries and restart them by holding the power button for 15 seconds.
