DeviantArt launches its own content generator powered by artificial intelligence

DeviantArt runs its own AI-assisted content generator, and the platform ensures that control is handed over to the human creator.

Not everyone is convinced that the art created by artificial intelligence is really art, but the generators that exist today certainly have a great future. DeviantArt, in turn, is entering this market with an artificial intelligence-based generator called DreamUp, promising “safe and fair”content creation for creators.

The site explains that one of artists’ main concerns about AI art is that their work could be used to create AI models, meaning that the generator could suggest work in their style without their consent. In an attempt to give artists control over their work, DeviantArt gives them the ability to choose whether the tool can use their style as a direct source of inspiration.

In addition, the site allows them to state if they want their work to be used in datasets to develop AI models for others. If they choose not to include them in these datasets, the HTML files of their content pages will contain the “noimageai”directive. In addition, the “noai”directive protects their operation when media files are downloaded directly from DeviantArt’s servers.

“DeviantArt encourages other creator platforms to adopt this approach so that artists can share their work with online audiences while maintaining control over non-human use,” the site explains in its announcement.

And the platform leaves control to the human creator.

These directives will of course not be added to the HTML files of the pages if they agree that their work can be used to generate AI models. And if they choose to let DreamUp use their style as a direct source of inspiration, they will be “explicitly credited”to the release when posted on DeviantArt. The site expected that some users would not be happy to see more AI-generated content, especially since Midjourney-generated content is already very popular on the platform. For this reason, content submitted via DreamUp will automatically be tagged with #AIArt and users can choose to view or hide posts in this thread.

DreamUp is now part of the benefits of DeviantArt Core paid subscription plans, but all users can test the tool for 5 materials for free.
