Digital Extremes Introduces Soulframe, Free-to-Play Fantasy MMO

Digital Extremes presents its Soulframe game project, a free-to-play MMO set in a promising fantasy world.

After nearly a decade on Warframe and more than five years since canceling their last project, Digital Extremes is working on a new game. The studio recently announced Soulframe, a free-to-play MMO set in a fantasy world. Other than the cryptic teaser, Digital Extremes has shared very few details about this upcoming game.

In an interview with The Washington Post, creative director Jeff Crooks said that the game took inspiration from Hayao Miyazaki’s The Neverending Story and Princess Mononoke, among others. Like the last one, Soulframe explores what happens when a person encounters nature. “The concept [in Soulframe] is that the world itself is a bit angry about what was done to it, and the foundations that support it are changing,”Jeff Crooks told The Post. “So there will be a certain proceduralism in the networks of caves and crevices and under the outside world.”

In terms of gameplay, Soulframe is primarily focused on “slow and heavy”melee combat. Despite the term “Soul”in the title, Jeff Crooks said his team didn’t have Soulslike in mind when they started the project, although it has since become impossible to ignore FromSoftware’s latest outdated masterpiece. “Obviously Elden Ring was a talking point, maybe the camera, maybe its great fight pace,” explained co-director Steve Sinclair. “And you know, fuck them, because, man, [Elden Ring] was fantastic.”

Soulframe doesn’t have a release date yet, and both Jeff Crooks and Steve Sinclair have made it clear that the game is still in early development, but as with Warframe, Digital Extremes intends to get the community involved. So expect frequent live streams on Twitch. In addition, some fans will certainly have the opportunity to enjoy early access in a few months.
