Apple’s mixed reality headset will run on “xrOS”. So RealityOS would change its name, at least internally.
According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple has changed the internal name of its own operating system to Mixed Reality Headset. The output is “realityOS, hello xOS”. As the reporter notes, this new name better reflects the capabilities of this software. After all, “XF”is rightfully synonymous with mixed reality, and the headset should offer both augmented and mixed reality.

In addition to this internal name change, Mark Gurman explains that a fictitious company called Deep Dive LLC has filed for the “xrOS”trademark in the United States and other countries, including parts of Europe and Asia besides Australia.. Mexico, Ukraine, Japan and Canada. In its filing, Deep Dive explains that it is registering a trademark for “head-mounted displays”and devices that offer “virtual and augmented reality experiences.”Apple has not confirmed who is actually behind this trademark registration.
A few months ago, Vox Media product manager Parker Ortolani discovered a patent application for “realityOS”filed by a fictitious company called Realiyo Systems LLC. Bloomberg also reported last August that another shady company with a different name had submitted bids for Reality One, Reality Pro, and Reality Processor.
Therefore, RealityOS would change its name, at least internally.
This recent change may indicate that the Cupertino-based company is gearing up for the official launch of its project. Mark Gurman explained that Apple plans to release its headset, custom operating system, and its own app store next year. According to previous reports, the device will offer virtual versions of native apps including Messages, FaceTime and Maps, as well as an iris scanner for authentication and large payments.
Recent job offers also seemed to indicate that the Cupertino-based company is actively working on its own mixed reality 3D world, which could thus become a direct competitor to Facebook’s vision for the future of the metaverse. To be continued!
