The Palera1n jailbreak, which is aimed at developers and uses the same venerable bootrom checkm8 hardware exploit as the checkra1n jailbreak, received an update on Monday adding semi-untethered support for devices running iOS and iPadOS 15.0-15.3.1.
Previously, Palera1n was only a tethered jailbreak, which meant that users had to use the computer to boot the jailbroken device after every power outage. Now that it’s semi-unhacked, users can at least boot into an unjailed state without a computer before re-jailbreaking their device. We discuss the differences between these types of jailbreaks in more detail in our dedicated comparison post for those who are interested.
We reiterate that Palara1n is a developer-only jailbreak, and this is important because, according to Palera1n developer Mineek, in a post posted via Discord on Monday, this new semi-untethered support is experimental in nature and takes up to 10 GB of disk space. space. This is because it creates a partition consisting of a fake rootFS copied from the real system partition.
Due to the amount of memory used by this workaround, devices with only 16 GB of internal memory are not supported by the new semi-untethered feature. These devices will continue to be linked.
Mineek and the Palera1n Twitter account provide a quick rundown of how semi-unbinding can be used. It looks like users will have to use the rootFS restore feature and then change the command used to jailbreak next time.
It’s also worth noting that palera1n’s tweak injection only works on iOS and iPadOS 15.0-15.3.1, so semi-offline support should go hand in hand with that.
