Continuing its commitment to mobile gaming, Electronic Arts has just confirmed a new RPG for mobile gaming, The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth. EA is partnering with Middle-earth Enterprises, a division of Saul Zaentz, to develop a new free-to-play mobile RPG.
The Lord of the Rings: Middle-earth brings a huge amount of Tolkien’s literary works to mobile devices, and so far the game has been built as a “Collectible RPG”. While it’s still unclear at this point what the game will end up being, this should be a big win for mobile gamers looking for big-budget RPGs on the platform.
The game is expected to enter a limited regional beta test this summer, but EA has yet to reveal which regions the beta will be available in.
EA Partners with Middle-Earth Enterprises to Bring New Lord of the Rings Game to Mobile Devices
EA has previously had the opportunity to work on several Lord of the Rings games for both console and PC. Heroes of Middle-Earth is being developed by Capital Games. The California studio has previously worked on Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes for Android and iOS devices.
EA claims it will be the company’s first mobile game inspired by “the storylines, locations, characters, and lore from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit literary works.”
The game will feature a compelling storytelling, turn-based combat, a deep collection system, and a wide roster of characters from the book’s vast universe. From the sound of it, the game sounds something like classic Final Fantasy turn-based combat games that feature collectibles as a prominent feature.
It will be interesting to see if EA can break new ground with The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth on mobile and if the game can compete with the giants of the mobile space like Call of Duty: Mobile and PUBG.: Mobile/BGMI.
