EA Confirms Cross-Play Console Functionality for 2 Modes in FIFA 22

EA has just confirmed that they will be testing crossplay functionality for two FIFA 22 game modes. Crossplay will soon be available for Online Seasons and Online Friendlies on the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and Stadia versions of the game.

Crossplay test for FIFA 22 is now available in the main menu of the game, where a widget has appeared in the lower right corner of the screen. The widget will show if the crossplay test is active or not.

Basically, this functionality will allow players on different platforms (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Stadia) to play with each other. This is a highly requested feature as it maximizes the ability for players to find matches and play with friends across platforms.

EA reiterates that this new feature will not impact gameplay, but may simply speed up matchmaking. Matchmaking in online seasons can be slightly faster while crossplay is enabled as this will effectively expand the player pool as players from other platforms will also be counted.

Players do not need to make any other changes other than enabling crossplay in FIFA 22 to benefit from crossplay in both online friendlies and seasons. It should also be noted that the new functionality is limited to online companions and seasons.

EA has assured fans that this test will inform the developers of the decision to implement crossplay in more game modes in future titles. Modes like Ultimate Team will likely take advantage of cross-platform play in future games, hopefully FIFA 23.

Players can opt out of crossplay by going to the Matchmaking Options section and toggling the opt-in/opt-out setting. This is a rather interesting development by EA, which fans of the game liked quite well.
