This is the official Apple iPhone repair kit.

Apple unveils its official iPhone repair kit, a very handsome beast I must admit.

Some time ago, Apple announced the creation of the Self-Service Repair Program, a program to make at least 200 official iPhone parts available to the general public. This new program is currently only available to residents of the United States, but should be available in Europe before the end of this year. Here is the official kit.

iPhone 12, 13, SE are the first Apple devices to be supported by this program, but Macs with the M1 chip should be next. In addition to parts, the Cupertino-based company offers a $49 repair kit for rent with all the tools you need to get the most out of your repair. And the least we can say is that this kit is pretty impressive, it comes in a Pelican case, weighing between 16 and 20kg on the scale for the dimensions 50×120cm.

After all, this is a very good idea. Repair shops don’t always have special tools designed by Apple to hold devices securely, apply even pressure, and the like. These tools sometimes need to be made for a specific model and are often only available from Apple.

A very beautiful animal, I must admit

Less well-equipped magazines may even override the original watertightness by interfering with it, and in fact create a risk of subsequent damage. Likewise, replaced screens often need to be calibrated, and some stores don’t have the equipment or knowledge to do so.

In fact, this is a very positive initiative for users, especially those who live relatively far from the repair center. Those who live in a big city where there is an Apple Store will obviously be faster to repair their iPhone directly, but if you are far away, this program can be very interesting if you can repair it yourself.

Apple has published a white paper with more details, it would be a good idea to read it if you plan to test this service someday.
