A new report claims that Apple’s headset may be called “xrOS”, which could also be the name of its custom operating system and Broeder software platform.
- What is happening? Apple has trademarked “xrOS”, which stands for “Augmented Reality Operating System”, which is rumored to be used in the company’s headset. The software was originally called “rOS”, an acronym for “Reality Operating System”, but has recently been renamed “xrOS”.
- Why care? The fact that Apple is moving towards registering a new “xrOS”brand is a strong indication that Apple’s headset is getting closer to its long-awaited debut.

Apple has apparently used front companies to trademark the “xrOS”brand around the world in order to avoid revealing itself as the submitter of the claims.
A new report says shell company Deep Dive LLC recently applied to trademark “xrOS”in the UK, European Union, Switzerland, Israel, Malaysia, Mexico, Ukraine, Philippines, Australia, Japan and Canada.
The shell company has applied for a trademark for the classifications, which include “head-mounted displays”and “virtual reality and augmented reality”devices. The same classifications were used for the original “realityOS”trademark last year.
Meta once developed a mixed reality software of the same name, but Gurman says Mark Zuckerberg’s company isn’t behind the latest claims. To sum it up, Apple appears to have filed trademark applications for “rOS”, “realityOS”, “xrOS”, “RealityOne”, and “RealityPro”for the hearing headset.
After several years of development, the Apple headset is supposed to have been completed and is expected to be released in 2023. Apple reportedly previewed the headset to its board of directors in early 2022.
The device is said to feature cutting-edge hardware, equipped with custom chips, 8K micro-OLED displays, and a host of built-in sensors and cameras for hand tracking and more. What is augmented reality?
VR, AR, MR, XR – what do these strange abbreviations even mean? VR, or virtual reality, means an experience that completely immerses you in the virtual world.
A good example is the PlayStation VR headset, which completely blocks out the real world. AR, or augmented reality, is similar to virtual reality, with the key difference being that computer images are superimposed on top of the real world, supplementing it with useful information.
The combination of the two gives you MR, or mixed reality, which is in many ways synonymous with augmented reality. In mouse reality, physical and virtual objects coexist and interact in real time. XR, or eXtended Reality, also refers to both AR and VR, so it’s basically a one-size-fits-all AR/VR combination. Since “augmented reality”sounds so much more powerful than VR, AR or MR, it’s better from a marketing standpoint than any of those terms.
