How to beat Garm in God of War Ragnarok
You can defeat Garm if Atreus places the soul of Fenrir in him. This is what you need to do in the last step. In the first step, you need to deplete his health by dodging a few of his attacks. So here’s a breakdown of his moves in both phases and how to counter them.
First phase
During the first phase, Garm uses the following attacks:
- Icy Shockwaves: Garm will stand on its hind legs and slam its front paws into the ground. This will send a large shockwave towards Kratos. You can dodge this attack by running or rolling to either side or parrying it.
- Bite Attack: This is a move that you cannot block. You can also see that this is indicated by a red ring. Wait for Garm to lunge at you and roll to either side before he can bite you to dodge him.
- Multiple bite attacks: These attacks will be indicated by a yellow ring. You can parry these attacks or block them. Either parry it and start your counterattacks, or block them all and attack after it’s done with your moves.
- Chain Slam: Garm slashes the chain at Kratos. You cannot block or parry it. Wait for the chain to get close and then roll away at the last second to dodge it. Throw your Leviathan Ax at him to freeze him. You can then pull this chain to stun and pull Garm closer to you. Unleash all your attacks on Garm before he gets back on his feet. - Ice Projectiles: Health is near the end. Garm will run away, climb onto the ice platform and fire ice projectiles at Kratos. Since Garm is out of your reach, you must dodge his projectiles until he returns to the fight.
An important thing you can do during this fight is to throw a spear at the golden shackles on his legs and neck. Once it hits the spot, your spear will explode. But only do these attacks if you are sure of your aim and speed. Garm is quite fast, so if you take too long to aim, he will use his next attack while you are aiming.
The best way to drain his health is to stun his chain and start his attacks or attack when his face is closer to you during his bites.
