Thor is the second boss you need to defeat in order to progress through the story of God of War Ragnarok. He’s not going to attack easily considering what Kratos did to his sons in the previous game. Luckily, once you know the techniques he uses in combat, defeating him is not difficult. So, in this guide, learn how to defeat Thor in God of War Ragnarok.
How to defeat Thor in God of War Ragnarok
You can defeat Thor by draining his health, parrying and dodging his attacks, allowing you to hit him more often. This fight consists of three phases, where Thor gradually starts to use more moves with each phase. In the first stage, you fight using only your fists. And in the remaining two phases, you can use your Leviathan Axe. After this fight, you will be able to unlock your Blades of Chaos.
Here is a breakdown of each phase and the moves he uses in each:
Phase 1
During his first phase, Thor mostly plays with Kratos and doesn’t do many fancy attacks. He will use the following movements:
- Grab Attack: You can spot this attack by red or yellow rings. Dodge attacks with red rings. For yellows, you can press the L1 button at the last second to parry. This will also give you the opportunity to make more moves. If Thor manages to grab you, he will throw you, causing you to lose a decent amount of health.
- Clap Shockwave: Thor claps his hands and launches a shockwave towards Kratos. Dodge the attack in time to dodge it.
Fill up the white bar under his health to deal a lot of damage to him, this will also decrease his yellow health bar faster. During the last bar of his yellow health, a cutscene plays and you move on to the second stage of his fight.
Phase 2
In the second phase, Thor uses all of his attacks from the first phase, but also starts using his hammer Mjolnir.
- Mjolnir strikes: Thor swings Mjolnir and tries to attack you. You can block all of these attacks with your shield.
- Hammer Throw: Thor throws his hammer at Kratos. You can dodge this attack by dodging it in time.
- Earth Energy Attack: This attack is similar to his hammer throw. Just this time, Thor forces his hammer to release energy from the ground and directs it at Kratos. You can dodge this attack by dodging it.
During the fight, Thor will kill you and then also revive you, saying that the fight is over when he says they are both done. After respawning, keep attacking him and taking away his health and this will start the third phase of the fight.
Phase 3. Defeat Thor in God of War Ragnarok.
Thor will now use all moves from the previous two phases with one new move.
- Lightning Strikes: Thor charges up his hammer and slams it down repeatedly on the ground. You can see red circles on the ground. Go outside of these circles when lightning strikes them. If Kratos is caught, he will be stunned.
The rest of the fight is the same as the previous two phases, keep taking away his health and you will quickly defeat him.
